John Paul II Karol Wojtyla, the first Slav pope and the first non-Italian pope since Adrian VI. He was born on May 18th, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland, passed away April 2nd, 2005 in Vatican. In 1944 he began study theology and then following liberalization of Poland, continued his studies at the Jagileo University. He was ordained on November 11th, 1946. On September 7th, 1958 he was named bishop of Ombia and suffragan bishop of the Krakow see. On December 30th, 1963 he was named archbishop of Krakow and on June 26th, 1967 cardinal. He was already an established and acknowledged figure when, on October 16th, 1978, he was elected pope with a large majority of votes in the conclave of cardinals and at a relatively young age.

Among the numerous trips to many countries all over the world undertaken by the pope since his election, we recall his first visit to us five years ago. Our Christian countrymen look forward to his imminent second visit to Slovakia
