HERVATOV
The wooden church of St. Francis of
Assisi in Hervatov was built around 1500. It is the only and the oldest Roman
Catholic wooden church in gothic style of architecture in Slovakia. The church
is made of red spruce and the foundation beams are of oak. and the roof is
covered by wooden shingles. Interior of the church has been completely
preserved however the original wooden paintings have been repainted in the
reformation period around 1665.

I did photograph the church few years
ago and this time I wasn't allowed to take pictures without written
authorization of the priest. He doesn't reside in Hervatov and I was told that
he is now in a village located just over the hill. I went to look for him, but
he was already gone. So I went to Richvald near by, the village where he
lives. I was told by father Jozef Heske that the church is in need of some
major emergency repairs as the main supporting beams are rotting away and need
to be replaced. The parish isn't large and they simply can't afford it without
some help. If you are able to help in saving this historic church by financial

St. Francis of Assisi wooden church in Hervatov will be
celebrating their 500th anniversary on May 19. in Hervartov starting at 10:30
AM. Vladimir Linder will have photo exhibit entitled: "Dreveny
Kostol v Hervatove Wooden Church in Hervatov" Slovak Heritage Live IV, in the Historic City Hall in Bardejov
and in the new Church of Sacred Hearth in Hervatov.
