National Historic Monument

The first written document from 1247 mentions that originally there was a monastery church in the place of today's St. Egidius cathedral. The construction started in 14th century as a three ships cathedral with simple arcades. In 1448-1458 Bardejov's builder master Mikulas finished the sanctuary and sacristy and a chapel of St. Katarina above-the king's oratorium. Soon after, static problems occurred and the innovative construction of the chapel's vault collapsed.

The same year a king's master builder Stefan was called from Košice to built a new vaulted ceiling. The cathedral was finally finished at the end of the 15th century and work on furnishing the interior has begun. Most valuable part of the interior, eleven unique wing altars are preserved basically in their original places from years' 1460-1520. During the fire and earthquake in 1725 the tower collapsed and in 1878 another fire was reason to complete reconstruction of the cathedral in the spirit of then neo-gothic principles.
